Christ stands on the left side wearing a red robe and holding the transparent victory banner in his hand. He bends down to liberate the ancestors from limbo. A naked female figure climbs the steps out of limbo and looks at the viewer. On the right half of the painting the saved souls are shown, among them Adam and Eve as well as St John the Baptist. The foreground is occupied by a group of naked children. The windows and arches of the architectural frame in which the scene is set open out onto an expansive landscape. In the top left corner the demons of hell fly through the air in wild confusion.
