Prince Johann is shown as a bust portrait close to the picture plane and facing right. His face, framed by a beard and dark brown hair, is shown in three-quarter profile. At the top left edge there are remnants of the date (1532) and the sitter's age ([?]8). He is wearing a particularly costly black coat. The collar and parts of the coat are decorated with golden brocade-like material, which Cranach hs executed employing a metallic glaze singular amongst his oeuvre. Beneath the coat the sitter wears a white shirt with a high collar decorated with golden embroidery and a neckband with pearls. There is a signet ring bearing the Anhalt coat-of-arms on his index finger and he wears a pearl necklace across his chest.
