'The age of the sitter suggests a creation date of about 1530 [...] the painting is more competently drawn and exhibits a more delicate and individual rendering of the sitter than the numerous small format portraits of Luther, that left the workshop in their dozens; however this painting does not rank among the really good, autographed portraits that Cranach painted of his friends.'

Plank I: 73 annual rings, 1520 - 1448; plank II: 93 annual rings, 1521 - 1429; plank III: 127 annual rings, 1523 – 1397

The youngest annual ring is from 1523; the earliest felling date is 1524; following a two year seasoning period the panel could have been used by 1526.

The planks I and III are from the same tree as the linked panels.
